Garcia ousted by McCarron
Garcia could not match McCarron
Sergio Garcia became the latest big name to be knocked out of the Accenture World Match Play Championship as he lost by a single hole to Scott McCarron.
The result left Jose Maria Olazabal as the only European left in the quarter-finals of the Californian tournament. Garcia struggled throughout Friday's encounter at La Costa and joined Tiger Woods, David Duval and Phil Mickelson as the leading players out of the tournament. And the 22-year-old Spaniard had his chances to win the match but was let down by some dismal putting on the 15th, 16th and 17th holes. In the end, he was left needing a birdie putt on the 18th to level the match.
His shot fell short and McCarron moved into the quarter-finals as a result. Afterwards Garcia, the fourth seed, said: "I played well, but I just couldn't get the ball in the hole. "I missed a lot of putts today." A jubilant McCarron, who now faces Lehman, added: "Playing Sergio Garcia was a great match for me. "I played real solid all day long, just a couple of loose shots coming down the end trying to close the match out." Olazabal will be left carrying European hopes this weekend after he ended his contest with Mark Calcavecchia two up. The Spaniard put himself into a commanding position on the second hole against his opponent. Although Calcavecchia rallied, he fell two behind on the ninth following a bogey on the seventh and a two putt two holes later. From there, Olazabal held firm. Also in the running for the $1m first prize is Bob Estes who halted former world number Nick Price.
Estes was joined in the quarter-finals by Lehman, Brad Faxon, David Toms, Kevin Sutherland and Paul Azinger. Azinger ended a nailbiting contest with Sweden's Niclas Fasth one up but it was forced to go to extra holes. Fasth was left ruing his luck after missing an eight-foot putt for victory on the 18th hole only to send it just wide. Afterwards the Swede said: "I dominated the match and deserved to win it. "I played really well, was up all the time (until the match finished) and out-played him I felt. "I think it's the best game I have ever played." Toms became the last man in the next round as he beat compatriot Steve Flesch with a birdie on the final hole.
