Great Scott
By BBC Sport Online's Kitrina Douglas at Wentworth
Australian sensation Adam Scott may not have played much of a part at this year's Cisco World Match Play, but he has stayed in Surrey, watching the action and fine tuning his game. Scott was beaten in the first round by Thomas Bjorn but has huge support in England and is tipped to be the most likely challenger to Tiger Woods in years to come. Although Scott's golf record is interesting and noteworthy, I was more intrigued to know the Adam Scott that lurked behind the public image. As a former player, I know how important it is to get away from golf from time to time when it is your work rather than your hobby. So, for instance, when I asked Adam about the most difficult thing coping with his new lifestyle he replied: "Cooking for myself." Dazzling barbecue Not that it had been a problem this week, but he gave a hint of his doubtful abilities in the kitchen by claiming that his speciality was honey on toast. If he is really pushed he says he can manage an interesting, if dangerous, spaghetti concoction. Of course, like any self-respecting Aussie, Adam can turn his hand to a dazzling barbecue when he is let loose in the garden. Like so many who travel for work, he says that he cannot live without his music and identified his favourite artists as Michael Jackson and David Gray. Likes to escape Adam's love of music is not restricted to listening either. Although some say his playing needs a bit of work, he owns both a clarinet and guitar. Home for Adam is the Hope Islands and for the Aussie, escaping back there is essential for his sanity. When there, a typical day is spent swimming on the reef or wave jumping on one of his Yamaha 1200GPR jet skis.
From the way he talks about his life, sport is obviously centrally important to Adam. As a youngster he spent many hours catching waves on the sunshine coast where he said he was mainly a longboarder. Through golf he has met one of the all-time surfing greats, Kelly Slater, who inspired him to spend some time on a shortboard. Here at Wentworth, sport has been very much on his social agenda. While most of the competitors have been entertaining large entourages, Adam has had a table tennis table installed in his temporary home. He asked me to publicise that he's looking for challengers. "I'm quite good," he said, "I'll play anyone."
