Hole-by-hole: World Match Play
Harrington could not reproduce his morning form
Cisco World Match Play Championship final at Wentworth:
I Woosnam (Wal) v P Harrington (Irl) Woosnam wins 2&1 Afternoon session 17th hole (par 5): As the rain begins to fall more heavily, Harrington hits a magnificent tee-shot and follows it up with a superb iron shot to reach the green in two. The Irishman has a 16-foot eagle putt which he leaves just short leaving Woosnam another putt for the match - this time the Welshman makes no mistake.
16th hole (par 4): Woosnam has a long putt to win the match but cannot sink it so the hole is halved in four.
15th hole (par 4): Woosnam piles on the pressure by dropping his second shot just a few feet from the pin. Harrington cracks and dumps his second in a bunker to the left of the green. He lofts the ball out well, stopping the ball dead but leaves himself a 10-foot putt downhill.
Woosnam drags his putt just left and Harrington holes out for a half. 14th hole (par 3): Both players are deceived by the swirling wind - Woosnam finds the front of the green while Harrington ends up well right of the pin. Both men get up to the cup and the hole is halved. 13th hole (par 4): The pressure appears to be getting to Harrington as he is outdriven by Woosnam and then misses the green while the Welshman lands level with the pin.
The Irishman's tentative chip stops well short and he concedes the hole. 12th hole (par 5): Harrington pushes his second shot into a bunker while Woosnam lands safely on the fringe of the green and gets down in two. Harrington chips well from the bunker but misses the putt to fall behind.
11th hole (par 4): Both players are on the green in two - Harrington misses his but Woosnam makes no mistake to level the match.
10th hole (par 3): Both players pop their balls nicely onto the green but both miss reasonable birdie opportunities to halve the hole in three. 9th hole (par 4): Harrington splays his tee-shot into woods on the right and his misfortune increases when the ball moves as he addresses it, costing him a one-stroke penalty. Woosnam fails to capitalise and hits through the green. But Harrington's next shot also clears the green and ends up in a ditch full of water. Woosnam gets a free drop and finds the edge of the green.
Harrington has to take a penalty drop but does not hole his chip so finally concedes the hole. 8th hole (par 4): Both men hit excellent second shots to set up birdie opportunities.
Woosnam sinks his nine-footer to put the pressure on Harrington but the Irishman holds his nerve to halve the hole.
7th hole (par 4): Harrington finds a ditch from the tee and has to take a penalty drop and then finds a bunker just in front of the green.
Meanwhile Woosnam hits a beautiful second shot making it inevitable that the hole is his. 6th hole (par 4): Both players appear to have lost a bit of fizz as they both find the green in two but neither is in a birdie-threatening position.
However, Harrington is unlucky not to hole his long-range effort but the hole is halved in par.
5th hole (par 3): Harrington ends up just off the green and sees his putt scrape past the hole.
Woosnam is on the green buts hits his birdie putt too hard and has to settle for a half.
4th hole (par 5): As it begins to spit with rain, Harrington gets a bit of luck after overhitting his second to behind the green.
His ball ends up in a muddy patch trampled down by spectators and the Irishman gets a free drop and gets up and down in two to match Woosnam's birdie. 3rd hole (par 4): Both players have decent birdie chances but Woosnam slides his wide.
Harrington learns from the Welshman's putt and sinks his nine-footer to win the hole.
2nd hole (par 3): Woosnam hits to just off the back of the green while Harrington finds a bunker, although with a nice lie.
Harrington gets up and down for a three while Woosnam runs his seven-footer just right of the hole. 1st hole (par 4): Both players miss the fairway with their opening drives. Woosnam puts his second shot on the front of the green while Harrington overhits to the back edge.
The Irishman takes three from there while Woosnam sinks his par putt to win the hole. Morning session Padraig Harrington finishes the first 18 holes 2-up on Ian Woosnam after shooting a 61. Woosnam took 28 shots on the outward nine, a new championship record, which included seven consecutive birdies. But the Irishman fought back on the back nine with seven birdies and two pars. |
