Monty's Ryder Cup bid
![]() Montgomerie has his sights set on the Ryder Cup
Colin Montgomerie is hoping to secure his Ryder Cup place this week with a good result in
the Scandinavian Masters in Sweden.
The Scot had a week off after the Open and was pushed down to eighth in the standings after Bernhard Langer's win at the Dutch Open. "I'm playing in four of the five events left to count, so if I don't make it I've only myself to blame. "It would be nice to get it done earlier than later, though," he added. But Montgomerie welcomed Langer's run of form, saying it was a boost for the European team ahead of the Ryder Cup. "It was a fantastic win by Bernhard and great for Sam Torrance.
"Bernhard's experience will be greatly needed and he's the sort of player who can play with anybody, so that gives Sam an extra benefit. "It does mean that eighth, ninth and 10th spots are under threat now, though, so I'll try and get rid of that problem this week and help Sam out. That's why I'm here." Montgomerie can take confidence in the fact that he won the Malmo-based event in 1999. "Two years ago I won by nine shots here, but I'll take anything to give Sam a bit of respite," admitted Montgomerie. The Scottish player is also hoping Jesper Parnevik, who is looking for a hat-trick of Scandinavian victories, performs well. "It's a lot to ask, but the European team would be all the better if Jesper and Sergio Garcia made the team automatically," he said.
"It is comforting to know that Sam is thinking of me but I would sooner make it on my own," said Parnevik. "I can only get up to about 20th place this week, so my hopes are really more with the US PGA Championship. "There's no reason why I can't do it. I'm playing well enough." Parnevik is prepared to add the BMW International to his schedule if he has not made the team ahead of the the final qualifying event. "At the moment I'm not down to play in Munich but if I'm close to getting in then I'll probably change my mind and play," he said. Philip Price, who is ninth in the standings, is playing in Sweden but 10th-placed Irishman Paul McGinley is bypassing the event.
