Woosnam's Ryder battle
Ian Woosnam in action at the Open
Ian Woosnam is hoping to put the Open behind him
Ian Woosnam will be looking to put his Open nightmare behind him as he returns to the European Tour at the Scandinavian Masters.

The Welshmen, currently 15th in the points list for Ryder Cup qualification, will be hoping for a good performance in Malmo to boost his chances.

A two-shot penalty in the fourth round at Royal Lytham for having an extra club in his bag cost him over £200,000 and a certain place in European team.

Winning my Ryder Cup place over the next few weeks is my chief concern now
  Ian Woosnam

"Obviously I've thought of nothing else every day since it happened" said the Welshman.

"That's bad enough, but people keep reminding me of it, too, when I just want to get on with things."

"It's water under the bridge now, as far as I'm concerned," added the 43-year-old, "I just want to remember I was third in the Open."

"Winning my Ryder Cup place over the next few weeks is my chief concern now. I have this week, next week in the Wales Open and then the US PGA Championship."

Victory in the Scandinavian Masters, where 300,000 points are on offer, would cement Woosnam's place in European captain Sam Torrance's team.

"I can do it this week if I get my driving going," Woosnam explained.

"The driving is my only worry because everything else seems fine."

Westwood's problems

Lee Westwood is hoping for a change in fortunes

Defending champion Lee Westwood has admitted that his form needs to improve before the Ryder Cup.

"It's not a tournament you want to go into playing particularly poorly. If you get there without your game, you're not going to find it at the Ryder Cup."

Last year's European number one puts his poor form this year down to taking a break at the start of the season.

Westwood says that since the lay-off he has not really got back into the swing of things.

"I've been my own worst enemy," he admitted.

"I got into a comfort zone and it's been difficult to get focused this year."

Other players looking to use Malmo as a base to get into the team are Mathias Gronberg, Andrew Oldcorn and Robert Karlsson.
