Teske prevails in Evian thriller

Teske chips out of trouble in her final round
Australia's Rachel Teske has scooped the richest prize in women's European golf with a dramatic one-shot win in the Evian Masters in France.

Bouncing back from injury at the Rochester International in New York last week, she fired a four-under-par 68 to win the 222,426 first prize with an aggregate score of 273.

Teske, who finished at 15 under par, won by a single stroke from Sweden's Maria Hjorth, who blew her chances by missing a two-foot putt for par at the short 17th.

Laura Davies notched a brilliant eight-under-par 64 in her final round to finish as the joint-leading Briton with Catriona Matthew, tied in 11th on seven under par for the tournament.

Davies equalled the course record with a round which included seven birdies and an eagle and dropped her only shot at the last.

She was upset somewhat by a group of around 50 protesters, who blew whistles and set off firecrackers beside the 18th green as part of an on-going industrial dispute involving Evian's parent company, Danone.

"They did upset me in that I was expecting them to make a noise when I putted, but they didn't," Davies said afterwards.

Matthew, who finished her round when the demonstrators had long parted, ended with two birdies to join Davies in collecting 27,591.

Meanwhile, it was a day of divided loyalties for Australian Shaun McBride, who is Teske's caddie but Hjorth's long-time boyfriend.

"It was very hard," McBride admitted.

But Teske paid testament to his professional focus: "I know it was difficult but he was giving 100% so it was fine."

"I came here with no expectations after the injury and was just relieved to be able to play.

"To win one of the biggest events in the world is amazing," she said.
