Pettersen takes French Open
Becky Morgan
Becky Morgan came close to her first big win
Welsh rookie Becky Morgan just missed out on a first pro victory when she lost out in a play-off to Norway's Suzann Pettersen in the French Open in Arras.

The 26-year-old Briton shot a one-under par 71 to tie with 20-year-old Pettersen, last year's world amateur champion, on an eight-under-par total of 280.

But it was Pettersen, with a birdie at the third play-off hole, who claimed the spoils.

She became the first Norwegian to win on the European women's circuit.

For Morgan, the outcome was a mixture of delight and disappointment.

"At the moment, I feel pretty down," admitted the player who had her father, Gwynne, as her caddie.

"But halfway through the final round I never thought I'd get anywhere near winning - so I suppose I should be pretty happy."

For Pettersen, it has been an even more spectacular start to her paid career.

She turned pro last September, but this was only her second tournament as she was sidelined from November to April with a stress fracture to her left ankle.

Another two youngsters, French rookie Karine Icher, who was the third-round leader, and Italy's second-year pro Giulia Sergas tied for third.
