Zippy has been named your favourite sporting celebrity by a landslide margin.

More than 15,000 votes were received (an additional 2,500 were cast on Thursday), with the Rainbow puppet - Dundee United's biggest fan - polling an incredible 47%.

The real battle was for second place - with Sheffield United fan Sean Bean's '100% Blade' tattoo just earning him the nod ahead of Norwich supremo Delia Smith and Manchester City devotees Liam and Noel Gallagher.

But it was Zippy who stole the show, after we revealed he was a United supporter. Rainbow presenter Geoffrey Hayes said: "Zippy was going to be blue before I begged the producers to make him tangerine.

He's a Dundee United fan like me - I was determined he wasn't going to be blue!" (The colour of United's arch-rivals Dundee).

Former Watford chairman Elton John notched fifth place, ahead of Robbie Williams (Port Vale) and Fatboy Slim (Brighton) - with Mick Jagger (England cricket), Spike Lee (New York Knicks and Arsenal) and Pete Doherty (QPR) bringing up the rear.

Apologies to the 2,500 of you who voted before 1720GMT on Thursday, when the vote was reset to zero. But after factoring those in, it made no difference to the final order.
