Ma'a Nonu might look like he has just joined US rockers Kiss, but the All Blacks rugby player insists his new eyeliner is merely a fashion statement.
The midfielder admitted on Tuesday that he had recently started wearing dark eye make-up during matches.
Nonu said his team-mates gave him "some grief" but he was undeterred and would continue wear it on New Zealand's pending tour to Britain and Italy.
The Wellington centre is hoping his new look catches on with the other players.
Nonu said he had always tried to express his personality on the field.
He began by wearing dreadlocks and, when that became common among New Zealand players, experimented with various hair colours.
The All Blacks will play Tests against Italy, Wales and France and a match against the Barbarians on their Northern Hemisphere tour later this month.
One thing is for certain, Nonu is as likely to dazzle crowds with his eyeliner as with his playing skills.
