Let's play: WWE Smackdown!

The Smackdown series is one of the most popular games in the yearly update schedule.

Its annual release is always a huge seller and this version will probably be no exception.

Wrestling seems to have become an incredibly successful phenomenon in the gaming calendar and it's all down to Smackdown.

  WWE Smackdown! Shut Your Mouth
Format: PlayStation2
Price: 39.99
Publisher: THQ
Genre: Wrestling
Also available: N/A

The feature list is impressive - with a fully updated roster of World Wrestling superstars including Hulk Hogan and Ric Flair.

It comes with a variety of backstage areas modelled on Madison Square Gardens and there are more than 14 Pay Per View arenas.

There's a plethora of new match types, as well as all-new multi-player capabilities offering six-player tag teams and a triple threat match.

The entrance for each wrestler is a spectacular affair - with all of the razzmatazz associated with TV.

The match types on offer are a credit to the developers of this game.

There's an excellent choice available, with something to suit everyone.

They include Elimination Tag, Slobber Knocker Anywhere and Captain Fall Tornado Six-Man Tag.

The familiar grappling control system makes playing SmackDown a very simple affair, with no complicated moves to learn - although it does put limitations on playability.

The most significant update to the controls is the inclusion of more complicated reversals.

WWE Smackdown!
Oi, Shut Your Mouth!

In last year's SmackDown, a move could easily be reversed by pressing the square button - but this time round the AI has been improved.

If you try and reverse a more complex attack from your opponent you'll find it backfires - depending on who your opponent is.

The game also offers more complex grapples with objects, such as tables and ladders.

And using them on an opponent is a great crowd pleaser.

The Season Mode found in the game comes with faster load times than before and works well - though the wrestlers' dialogue remains poor.

The Create-a-Wrestler mode, however, is greatly improved.

You can change just about anything now - including a wrestler's tattoos!

The multi-player support is also excellent, thanks to a very well executed six-tag team match.

The movement is much smoother, which is great news when you have six players battling on screen at the same time.

  Verdict
Graphics: 84%
Playability: 86%
Sound: 75%
Realism: 90%
Overall: 87%

On the graphics side, Shut Your Mouth has good and bad points.

The arenas are superbly well done, with excellent layout and ultra smooth texturing.

The animation on the wrestlers is excellent, but the characters could all do with a face-lift.

Nevertheless, the gameplay is first class and will be loved by WWE fans. Despite its flaws, this is the best Smackdown yet.
