2001: Members of the Professional Footballers' Association vote in favour of a strike over the distribution of television revenue.

It was not carried out as the dispute was eventually settled by the end of the month.

1985: Gary Kasparov becomes the youngest world chess champion at 22 years and 210 days when he beats defending champion Anatoly Karpov in Moscow.

1942: US golfer Tom Weiskopf is born.

He won 15 US Tour events, none of them majors, but was victorious in the 1973 Open at Troon. He still plays on the US Senior Tour.
