Sleeping fan's rude awakening
Steve Davis and Alan McManus sent a snooker fan to sleep with their slow play

Steve Davis has - perhaps unfairly - earned the reputation as one of sport's less compelling characters.

After all, the man ironically dubbed "Interesting" was involved in the legendary world snooker final of 1985.

Then, more than 18 million Brits stayed up way past their bedtime to see him beaten by Dennis Taylor - but not every game has been as thrilling.

And at least one spectator found Davis' LG Cup semi-final against Alan McManus on Saturday night rather less than riveting.

So much so, in fact, that the fan dozed off completely.

An embarrassing enough indiscretion in itself perhaps, although in most sports it would have gone pretty much unnoticed.

Unfortunately for the snoozing spectator, the hush of the Preston Guild Hall rather drew attention to his dreamlike state - thanks to his conspicuous snoring.

And in one of the most unique incidents of crowd disturbance ever seen in sport, event officials had to wake up the offending fan before ejecting him.

The dazed spectator was in no state to argue, as he was still apparently confused about exactly where he was.

It was a harsh line to take, considering the match went on for five hours and included one frame which was restarted twice after it became bogged down by tactical play.

But at least the sight of the sleeping beauty made the match, well, rather more "interesting" - even if Davis ultimately lost.
