1985: Tony Jacklin's European team inflicts defeat on the Americans at The Belfry in the Ryder Cup for the first time in 28 years.

Sam Torrance, this year's captain, assured Europe the Cup when he beat Andy North at the 18th in the singles.

1984: Lester Piggott breaks Frank Buckle's record of 27 Classic wins when he rides Commanche Run to victory in the St Leger.

1976: Derby County become the first British club to score 12 goals in a European match when they beat Finn Harps of Ireland 12-0 in a Uefa Cup tie.
