1868: Young Tom Morris registers the first hole-in-one in the Open when he aces the 166-yard eighth at Prestwick.
He goes on to beat his father, Old Tom, to become the youngest winner of the championship. 1891: Wolverhampton Wanderers' John Heath converts the first penalty kick in the Football League in a game against Accrington Stanley. 1905: Motorcycling's Isle of Man Tourist Trophy is first contested. 1955: Kidderminster Harriers and Brierley Hill Alliance make history as the first clubs to contest an FA Cup tie under floodlights. 1963: George Best makes his debut for Manchester United against West Brom at Old Trafford, watched by 50,453 fans. 2001: Tomas Repka signs for West Ham in £5.5m deal. |
