1885: Arbroath beat Bon Accord 36-0 in the Scottish FA Cup, with John Petrie scoring 13 goals. On the same day Dundee Harp beat Aberdeen Rovers 35-0.

1951: 'Sugar' Ray Robinson regains his world welterweight crown by beating Britain's Randolph Turpin in what was billed as the 'Fight of the Century' at the New York Polo Grounds.

1991: Gary Lineker captains England for the first time and scores the winner against Hungary in Graham Taylor's first game as manager.

2000: Gianluca Vialli is sacked as manager of Chelsea.

2001: Uefa postpone all European club matches in the wake of the terrorist attacks the previous day on the United States.
