1826: John Wisden, the man who first published what is now known as "The Cricketer's Bible" was born.

1951: Maureen Connolly won the 1951 US Open tennis title at the age of 16 years and 11 months.

1970: Austrian driver Jochen Rindt - who became motor racing's only posthumous world champion - was killed when his Lotus crashed during practice for the Italian Grand Prix.

1998: Tottenham parted company with manager Christian Gross - the man who had arrived on the tube -- after 10 turbulent months at White Hart Lane.
