On this day in history
1925: Austria beat Germany 6-3 in the first international handball match.

1935: Malcolm Campbell became the first man to travel at 300mph on land when he powered his Bluebird to a world record of 301.13mph in Utah.

1972: Northern Ireland's Mary Peters pipped West Germany's Heidi Rosendahl to the gold medal in the pentathlon at the Munich Olympics.

The result was only confirmed in the final event, which Peters ran in 24.08 seconds - had she been 0.1secs slower she would have missed out.

1999: Former England boss Bobby Robson, 66, was unveiled as the new manager of Newcastle United.
