1923: Former world heavyweight boxing champion Rocky Marciano was born. He won the title in 1952 after defeating 'Jersey Joe' Walcott and remained undefeated in all his 49 professional fights.

1972: Bobby Fischer defeated Russian Boris Spassky in Reykjavik to become the first American to win the World Chess Championship.

1989: Former Polish international Kazimerz 'Kazi' Deyna was killed in a car crash at the age of 41. The former Manchester City striker was capped 102 times for Poland and was their captain the day they knocked England out of the qualifiers for the World Cup in 1973.
