Phone throwing for the Olympics?
How Commonwealth Games men's shot putt champion Justin Anlezark might look in a mobile phone throwing competition

With the IOC planning to include golf and rugby sevens in the 2008 Olympics, news of another possible contender for inclusion has reached BBC Sport Online - mobile phone throwing.

A recent competition in Finland has seen 22-year-old Ali Aitken crowned world champion in the freestyle mobile phone throwing event.

"It's quite exciting at age 22 to be a world champion - even if it is mobile phone throwing," Aitken told BBC Five Live.

Shunning conventional rules of other throwing events like shot putt, javelin and discus, competitors in the freestyle event were marked on their throwing style rather than on distance thrown.

"It was wild, a lot of fun.

"You get a selection of phones, and then you are allowed to weigh them to find out which is the lightest and most aerodynamic.

"I did a little dance before my throw, but apparently it looked like a ballet dance.

"It was more of a poetic throw than a shot-putter's throw."

Aitken's victory was only confirmed after a nail-biting finale in which her closest rival shocked onlookers by removing her bra to use as a catapult.

"She was stiff competition, I can tell you!

"She threw after me. Had she gone before me I might have considered it myself."

For the more serious mobile phone thrower, an overarm throwing competition tested athletes' strength and stamina.

"People got very serious in the overarm event. There were lots of musclely types wearing spikes, and they all warmed up before chucking their phones."

Other events on the day included wife carrying and air guitar playing competitions.

Despite her world beating performance in the mobile phone event, Aitken's air guitar didn't impress the judges and she failed to progress past the heats.

"I did Joan Jett and the Blackhearts classic I love Rock 'n' Roll - a real girl's tune.

"But I didn't get through to the final, despite flashing my knickers at one point, which made me quite popular with the crowd."
