1989: Manchester United break the transfer record between two British clubs by paying Middlesbrough 2.3m for defender Gary Pallister.

1981: Sebastian Coe breaks the mile world record for the third time.

The record of three mins and 47.33, set in Brussels, stands for four years until broken by Steve Cram.
