Sure-fire loser
Flat jockey Ollie Pears is building up an unenviable losing streak
Many is the punter who has endured a lengthy losing streak - now jockey Ollie Pears knows how they feel.

The 27-year-old has gone 157 races without riding a winner.

Pears' latest loser arrived on Saturday afternoon at Ripon.

The Flat jockey came home unplaced on 50-1 outsider Queensboro Castle in a five-furlong contest to ensure that the worst spell of his career continues.

Quixall Crossett: The ultimate loser

Winless streaks are not uncommon in racing, with veteran chaser Quixall Crossett the sport's most notorious serial loser.

But a bad run can soon turn into a vicious circle - the fewer races you win, the fewer good rides trainers give you, the fewer races you win.

Although not a household name, Pears is well respected within racing and has been no stranger to the winner's enclosure in the past.

And the Sheffield-based rider is confident that his luck will turn sooner rather than later.

"It's not getting me down - I keep optimistic," he told the Daily Mail.

A William Hill spokesman told BBC Sport Online that Pears should not be worried about his losing streak and confirmed his firm was not taking bets on when his next winner will be.

But neither does it have any plans to open a book on him riding the winner of the next Derby.
