Washer tackle has Doc in stitches

"There ain't no tellin who you might meet" at the car wash, so the Rose Royce disco ditty goes.

But a wise-cracking soccer legend with his foot stuck in the machine is not what you expect to find down at your local Total station.

Former Manchester United boss Tommy Docherty still regularly dispenses his brand of wit and wisdom on the after-dinner circuit.

And the 74-year-old inadvertently gave himself some fresh material for future appearances after getting in a self-induced lather this week.

I have got the cleanest right foot in Britain
Tommy Docherty

Docherty took his prized Mercedes in for a scrub-up at the garage in Chesterfield on Thursday morning.

But no sooner had he popped her in for a five-star service than the local fire service were taking a call reporting a "person trapped in car wash".

The Doc's famed liking for a bit of banter distracted him from the task at hand when he spotted an old pal just as the dastardly machine was clicking into gear.

"I'd just put the card in and pressed the button ready to start the thing when I saw a bloke I knew from Chesterfield," he told BBC Sport Online.

"He asked me how I was and I said 'Fine thanks', but then I noticed the wash was starting and my window was open.

"I tried to jump back in the car but the machine started moving forward and my foot got jammed underneath it.

Tommy Docherty got his foot jammed unde a car wash
'At the car wash, whoa whoa whoa whoa'

"I couldn't get in the car and I couldn't get out of the car."

A tense half hour ensued as Docherty's delicate predicament prompted calls to the local fire and ambulance services.

Hydraulic cutting equipment was eventually required to slice away the back of the Doc's right shoe, before he could ease his injured foot out.

"We're used to people stuck in strange situations, but this was one of the more unusual ones," revealed fireman Kevin Yip, who attended the scene.

Rebate?

"Tommy was very brave and stoic about the whole thing, considering he had a car wash parked on his foot.

"In fact he said he had suffered worse tackles in the past."

The Doc did require a spot of medical attention however, ending up with five stitches in his foot and a "bit of tendon trouble".

But the injury is unlikely to keep him out of action for long, and certainly doesn't appear to have dampened his enthusiasm for the car wash experience.

"I paid for a car wash and I never got one, so I am thinking of asking for a rebate!" the Doc quipped.

"But I have got the cleanest right foot in Britain."
