1980: Bjorn Borg wins his fifth consecutive men's title, beating John McEnroe
in a five-set thriller in the final.
1975: Arthur Ashe beats fellow American Jimmy Connors to become the first black men's champion at Wimbledon. 1929: Surrey and England left-arm spinner Tony Lock is born. Famed for his county and international partnership with Yorkshire-born off-spinner Jim Laker, he was a member of the hugely successful Surrey side of the 1950s. He took 174 wickets in 49 Tests between 1952 and 1968. 1919: France's Suzanne Lenglen becomes the first non-English-speaking women's champion at Wimbledon. It was the first of five successive titles for Lenglen. 1879: Dwight F Davis, the man responsible for tennis' Davis Cup, is born. |
