1984: Alvin Kallicharan sets a Gillette/NatWest Cup record with a massive 204 for Warwickshire against Oxfordshire.

It stood until last month, when it was beaten by Ali Brown's 268 for Surrey.

1969: Ann Jones finally wins her first Wimbledon after 13 previous attempts, beating Billie-Jean King 3-6 6-3 6-2.

1962: Pam Shriver, who won 21 Grand Slam doubles titles in partnership with Martina Navratilova, is born.

1938: Helen Wills-Moody wins her eighth Wimbledon title.

1919: Jack Dempsey beats Jess Willard to become the new world heavyweight boxing champion.
