On this day in history
1904: First recorded speedway race was held at Portman Road, Ipswich.

1938: Helen Wills-Moody beat Helen Jacobs 6-4 6-0 to win a record eighth Wimbledon singles title. Martina Navratilova has since beaten her record.

1998: South African pair Gary Kirsten and Jacques Kallis put on a record 238 for the second wicket on the first day of the second Test with England at Old Trafford.

The stand was also the highest by South Africa for any wicket since their reintroduction to international cricket.

Kirsten went on to make 210 while Kallis hit 132 out of 552 for five - their country's highest-ever score against England.

2000: World champions France beat Italy 2-1 with a golden goal from substitute David Trezeguet to win the final of Euro 2000 in Rotterdam.
