1967: Colour transmissions were introduced on BBC2 for the first time with nearly seven hours of coverage of the Wimbledon tennis championships.

1977: Virginia Wade beat Betty Stove to win the women's singles title at Wimbledon in the Queen's Silver Jubilee year.

1979: Steve Ovett deprived Sebastian Coe of his world mile record when he set a new best mark of three minutes and 48.8 seconds in Oslo.

1999: Former England captain David Platt was appointed as manager of Nottingham Forest. He left two years later to take charge of the England Under-21s.
