Sven's cake expectations
test hello test

Forget the state of David Beckham's foot, England's World Cup hopes depend on...Jaffa Cakes!

The chocolate orange snacks are set to play a key role in Sven-Goran Eriksson's strategy after the England coach ordered them to be put on the menu.

Unfortunately you cannot get Jaffas in Japan and South Korea, so they will be shipped out to the players' hotel by the box-load.

"We'll definitely be bringing our own Jaffa Cakes with us," England team chef Roger Narbett confirmed.

They say each cake is full of mischief
McVitie's press officer Sarah Goodfellow

"There were a few things I couldn't find over there - we'll also be taking baked beans and cereals."

So what's the big deal about the humble Jaffa?

We asked McVitie's press officer, Sarah Goodfellow, to enlighten us.

"They're high in carbohydrates, low in fat and taste great," she enthused.

Edge

Ah, but can they propel England to World Cup glory?

"Let's hope so - they say each cake is full of mischief, so maybe that will help us have the edge on the football pitch," she added.

Full of mischief? Probably not a good idea to let Beckham at the packet before the Argentina game, in that case.

David Beckham
Lay off the Jaffas, Becks!

Still, there might be something in it.

Manchester United have been feeding their players Jaffa Cakes this season and looked set to be munching their way to Champions League glory.

Until they came up against a team who'd had three Shredded Wheat for breakfast.

So while Mr Eriksson will be quietly confident about England's chances, he won't be taking anything for granted.

As he knows only too well, you can't have your cake and eat it.
