2001: Former Great Britain international Bobbie Goulding joins his sixth professional club after agreeing a two-year deal with Salford.

1996: Cricket umpire Harold 'Dickie' Bird announces he willl retire after the second Test against India at Lord's in June.

1959: Heavyweight boxer Henry Cooper wins his first British title, beating Brian London over 15 rounds.

1944: Former heavyweight boxing champion Joe Frazier is born.

He claimed the New York version of the title in 1968 and became unified champion in 1970.

In 1971 he became the first man to beat Muhammad Ali.

1934: Great Britain rugby league international Mick Sullivan is born.

Left-winger Sullivan scored a record 45 international tries between 1954 and 1963.
