Super bloopers
BBC Radio's Rob Nothman has got together a collection of his favourite howlers - many of which happened live on air.
The sixth in the series goes back to the old days of Radio 5, when children's stories often used to follow sport items. Unfortunately for John Rawling, it all became a bit too much one particular day. 'Dog's dinner'
In the pre 5-Live days, when BBC Radio's sports output was accommodated on Radio 5, you could listen to the main sports desk of the day and then hear a children's story immediately afterwards. It was the charm of Radio 5 - an unusual mixture of programmes housed under the same roof. Regular listeners will remember cult shows like the Poddington Peas and Wiggly Park cropping up in between live sports programmes from around the world. To present the sports bulletins in those days you had to be quite an all-rounder - a sports enthusiast as well as a continuity announcer. It all proved too much one day for John Rawling, who had to introduce a particularly unusual story. Just one innocent phrase, and he has presenter Ian Payne in a fit of giggles.
