1902: Edgbaston became the fifth English Test cricket ground. England celebrated by bowling out Australia for just 36 runs.
1968: Two goals from Bobby Charlton helped Manchester United beat Benfica 4-1 after extra-time to become the first English winners of the European Cup. 1985: A riot at the Heysel Stadium in Brussels resulted in 41 Italian and Belgium fans losing their lives as a wall and safety fence collapsed before the start of the European Cup final between Liverpool and Juventus. Juventus won the match 1-0. 2000: Ipswich - losing semi-finalists for three seasons in a row - came from behind to beat Barnsley 4-2 in the First Division play-off final at Wembley and secure a return to the Premiership after four seasons in the Nationwide League. |
