2000: England midfielder Steve McManaman scores a second half volley to help
Real Madrid beat Valencia 3-0 and win the Champions League final.
It was the eighth time the Spanish side have lifted the European Cup. 1999: Lawrence Dallaglio quit as captain of England's rugby union team and pulled out of the squad to tour Australia following allegations of drug-taking. 1984: Alan Pettigrew sets a world record by throwing a haggis 180ft 10in at Inchmurrin, Strathclyde. 1899: French tennis star Suzanne Lenglen, the first non-English speaking winner of the Wimbledon ladies' singles, is born. She won the first of her six Wimbledon singles titles in 1919. The loose, short-length dress she wore revolutionised fashion in the ladies' game. Five of her six titles were won in consecutive years, 1919-23. 1877: The MCC and Ground cricket team dismiss Oxford University for 12 runs at Oxford. The total remains the lowest for a first-class innings, although this unenviable record was later shared by Northamptonshire in 1907.
