1963: Tottenham become the first British winners of a European trophy when they beat Atletico Madrid 5-1 in Rotterdam to take the Cup Winners' Cup.

Jimmy Greaves scored twice for Spurs.

1948: Australia scores 721 runs against Essex at Southend-on-Sea.

At the time it was the largest total achieved in one day's play in a first class cricket game.

1929: England lose their first international soccer match outside the British Isles when they are beaten 4-3 by Spain in Madrid.

1892: Welsh world flyweight champion Jimmy Wilde is born.

He was known as 'Mighty Atom' because of the power he could pack for such a small man. Wilde died in 1969.

1862: The first baseball stadium is opened at the Union Grounds in Brooklyn, New York.
