Premier League referee Chris Foy will take charge of the FA Cup final between holders Chelsea and Portsmouth at Wembley on 15 May.

The 47-year-old from St Helens was the fourth official at the 2008 final, in which Pompey defeated Cardiff 1-0.

"To get any appointment from the FA is always a great honour, but this surpasses anything that has happened to me in the past," said Foy.

"I've worked very hard to better myself and to reach this stage."

In 2009 Foy oversaw the Carling Cup final between Manchester United and Tottenham and also took charge of United's Community Shield clash with Chelsea at the start of the season in August.

He added: "I am happy, not just for my family and friends, but also for the wider referee family.

"I think the foundation stones for times like this are set over a number of years. It's a great honour."

The honour of refereeing an FA Cup final is traditionally bestowed on an official only once during their career.

John Flynn and Shaun Procter-Green will be Foy's assistant referees, while the fourth official will be Premier League referee Andre Marriner.
