Bolton 2-2 Southampton (6-5 on penalties)

Bolton went through to the quarter-finals of the Worthington Cup after beating Southampton on penalties at the Reebok Stadium.

The sides had finished locked at 2-2 after extra-time of a thrilling game.

They then scored five penalties apiece before Chris Marsden's weak effort was saved by Bolton keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen.

Substitute Rod Wallace stepped up to score the decisive spot-kick for the Trotters.

Dean Holdsworth had given Bolton the lead with a penalty in the 55th minute, after Paul Williams brought down Japanese striker Akinori Nishizawa in the area.

Kevin Davies equalised for Saints 10 minutes from time with a close-range effort following good work from Marian Pahars and James Beattie.

Michael Ricketts came off the bench and performed the super-sub role that he was renowned for last season by scoring in extra-time.

He outstripped Southampton defender Tahar El Khalej and held him off before shooting right-footed past Jaaskelainen.

The defender made ammends just a minute later when he restored parity for the determined Saints.

Bolton: Jaaskelainen, Southall, Diawara, Hendry, Barness, Hansen, Warhurst, Farrelly, Johnson, Holdsworth, Nishizawa.
Subs: Viander, N'Gotty, Ricketts, Norris, Wallace.

Southampton: Jones, Dodd, Williams, El Khalej, Bridge, Telfer, Oakley, Svensson, Marsden, Beattie, Pahars.
Subs: Moss, Benali, Delap, Tessem, Davies.
