Newcastle 4-1 Brentford
Lloyd Owusu
Owusu gives Brentford a surprise lead
Newcastle were given a nervous time before Craig Bellamy's extra-time hat-trick gave them victory against Brentford in the Worthington Cup.

The visitors took the lead through Lloyd Owusu after 17 minutes and they held lead until Shola Ameobi equalised in the 59th minute.

Brentford held on to take the game into extra-time but substitute Bellamy's triple gave Bobby Robson's side victory.

But Steve Coppell's side gave Newcastle a scare when they made their physical presence felt as they aimed to extend a run of five wins.

Tiredness

The visitors were rewarded when Owusu raced clear and beat Magpies keeper Steve Harper.

Newcastle began to find their stride and Ameobi and Laurent Robert both went close.

Ameobi then equalised when he latched onto a Solano and volleyed in off the post.

Brentford began to show signs of tiredness but could have gone back in front after 78 minutes only for Owusu to shoot wide.

Both sides then went close on the stroke of the final whistle before the tie went into extra-time.

Substitute Bellamy then scored a hat-trick to see Newcastle to victory.
