Everton 1-1 C Palace (4-5 on pens)
Everton striker Kevin Campbell
Campbell knew his miss would be costly
Kevin Campbell missed the penalty that condemned Everton to another humiliating early Worthington Cup exit.

The Everton captain missed his side's first kick in the shoot-out, and although the other four home players scored, Palace held their nerve to book their place in the third round.

Normal time was also a tale of penalties, with Duncan Ferguson's spot-kick cancelled out almost immediately by Dougie Freedman.

Ferguson scored in the 7th minute after Campbell was tugged back by Palace defender Tony Popovic.

But Dougie Freedman, who was a constant threat for the visitors, was brought down by Everton keeper Paul Gerrard just three minutes later, and Freedman duly beat him from the spot.

Overall we deserved it because we were the better footballing side on the night
Palace manager Steve Bruce

Palace more than held their own throughout the match, and not only frustrated the home side but created several promising openings themselves.

Freedman underlined that with a burst past four defenders before forcing a fine point-blank save from Gerrard.

And in the third minute of injury time, the Scottish striker turned Abel Xavier, raced away and hit the crossbar from the edge of the box.

Before extra-time started, Everton brought on youngsters Nick Chadwick and Tony Hibbert.

But it was to no avail and penalties became inevitable.

Dean Austin scored after Campbell's miss, and while Steve Watson, Xavier, Idan Tal and Gascoigne did find the net, so did Freedman, Aki Riihilahti, Hayden Mullins.

That left Clinton Morrison with the crucial kick, and he calmly rifled home to inflict another Cup exit on sorry Everton.
