Worthington Cup snub for Old Firm
The Old Firm could take part in future years
The Football League has dismissed reports that Rangers and Celtic will take part in the Worthington Cup this season.
Football League chairman Keith Harris had suggested inviting the Glasgow giants to enter the English League Cup. But Football League officials confirmed to BBC Radio Scotland that no changes will be made to this season's competition. A statement said: "Celtic and Rangers will not compete in this season's Worthington Cup. "The first round draw has already been made so the competition is. to all intents and purposes, underway. "There have been no discussions with any other parties on this subject and it is purely a fledgling idea at this stage. "There are several huge obstacles to overcome in order for it to ever become reality. "It is not only addressing questions about the Worthington Cup but also the nature of cross-border competition, which is clearly a matter for not only the Football League but also Uefa. "What is absolutely certain is that the competition's place in the Uefa Cup is far more important than the entry of Celtic or Rangers."
Harris told BBC Radio Five Live: "Part of our job at the Football League is to come up with ways of further improving competitions. "We're looking at new ways of spicing it up and improve its appeal to the television audience. "Clearly, the inclusion of Celtic and Rangers would do that - but I have to stress that it is still early days. "There are several hurdles which would have to be overcome and a key one would be the Uefa Cup place. "There are a lot of details which would have to be firmed up first, and we would also need acceptance from the Premiership." Harris believes it is possible that the Old Firm clubs could be invited to take part in the 2002/03 League Cup. He added: "I have not spoken to anyone at Celtic or Rangers yet - so we don't know if the idea appeals to them or not at this stage." Many of the top sides, including Arsenal and Manchester United, have recently used the competition to give some of their reserve and youth team players a taste of first-team action.
