The highlight of an international career spanning 11 years was starting in all three of the USA’s games at the 2006 World Cup in Germany, the country where he has spent his entire career with Hannover.
The right-back, who captained an experimental USA side during last year’s Gold Cup, is expected to provide back-up to Jonathan Spector but injuries to others mean he could yet feature in a reshuffled defence.
Cherundolo’s 12th season with Hannover ended with a last-day escape from relegation. He has made 293 league appearances for the club, a figure that would have been greater were it not for a serious hip injury that forced him to miss the second half of the 2008-09 season.
He was a late replacement for the 2002 World Cup but suffered a knee injury in South Korea and was unable to play.
He started a foundation in Hannover in 2005 dedicated to raising money for children with heart conditions who need surgery.
