The new hope of Uruguayan football, the skilful playmaker only made his Uruguay debut in the first leg play-off win against Costa Rica and was many pundits’ man-of-the match in the 1-1 draw that sealed qualification.
Lodeiro has been praised for his technical ability, intelligence on the ball, explosive bursts of pace and a clinical eye for goal. The 21-year-old joined Ajax in January, teaming up with international team-mate Luis Suarez, but struggled to start matches - his eight league appearances all came from the bench.
Born in Paysandu, Lodeiro came through the ranks at Montevideo giants Nacional and made his senior debut in 2007. He was instrumental as the club won the league title in 2008/09 and reached the semi-finals of the Copa Libertadores.
He captained Uruguay at the 2009 Under-20 World Cup in Egypt, prompting his call-up to the senior side.
