Known as 'El Matador', the tall, quick Palermo striker has scored 34 Serie A goals in 109 games since moving to Italy.
He scored on his Uruguay debut against Colombia in February 2008 after impressing at the South American Youth Championship the previous year, where he finished the tournament as leading goalscorer ahead of the likes of Brazil's Alexandre Pato.
Born in Salto in the south of Uruguay, Cavani moved to Montevideo at the age of 12 to join Danubio's youth team. He broke into the senior side in 2006, helping the club win the league title later that year.
He moved to Palermo in 2007 at the age of 20 and has been a regular starter since, hitting 13 goals in 34 league games this season as the club finished fifth to qualify for the Europa League.
