Player Profile

Equally happy at right-back or in midfield, Behrami is a useful option for Swiss coach Ottmar Hitzfeld but is likely to start on the bench in South Africa.

He was out for six months from March to September 2009 after suffering a serious injury to his left knee but made his international comeback in the November friendly against Norway.

West Ham insist Behrami is staying put at the London club, which he joined for £5m from Lazio in 2008. Several clubs, including Italian Serie A side Palermo, have shown an interest in him.

Born in war-torn Kosovo, he left with his family for Switzerland aged five and his football ability saved them from being repatriated to the region they had fled.

He was playing for a youth side on the Swiss-Italian border when he was spotted by a scout, who pushed the family’s case to become Swiss residents.

“Kosovan people are always close to my heart. When I play I think of them and try to give more,” he said.
