The left winger has shouldered the responsibility for being Switzerland’s main source of creativity since he became a regular five years ago. He was short-listed for Fifa’s Best Young Player award at the last World Cup, but was one of three Swiss players to miss in the penalty shoot-out defeat by Ukraine.
He suffered a cruciate ligament injury in 2004 but recovered fully and has just completed his sixth season in the German Bundesliga.
Barnetta spoke last summer of needing a new challenge, amid reported interest from Arsenal, but he has since extended his contract until 2012.
He made his professional debut for hometown club St Gallen aged 17 and insisted on completing a business apprenticeship with a fabric and bed-linen manufacturer before leaving for Leverkusen two years later.
He was ever present in the World Cup qualifying campaign.
