Player Profile
The attack-minded right-back’s non-stop running has earned him the nickname Forrest Gump at Lazio, where he has spent the last two seasons.
Lichtsteiner, who can also play on the right side of midfield, was given his new moniker by TV commentator Guido de Angelis last year.
The 26-year-old was a target for Everton and Paris St Germain in summer 2008 but he joined Lazio for £1.5m after three years with Lille.
He overtook injury-prone Phillip Degen as Switzerland’s first choice right-back in the lead up to Euro 2008, in which he started all three matches. Lichtsteiner played in eight of the 10 World Cup qualifiers but sat out the embarrassing home defeat to Luxembourg.
Lichtsteiner was once criticised by a youth coach for picking up too many yellow cards and for arguing with team-mates and referees, so he employed a psychologist to rid himself of the problem.
