Woelfli’s one World Cup qualifying appearance came in Switzerland’s final qualifier against Israel. He did his prospects no harm with a clean sheet in a 0-0 draw but he is likely to be on the bench in South Africa.
Something of a late developer, Woelfli made his international debut two years ago at the age of 26. He is a commanding presence in the penalty area, never short on confidence.
Captain of Swiss league runners-up Young Boys, he is also their longest-serving player. He has missed just seven league games for them in the last five seasons.
