Player Profile
One of the few players in the squad with real flair, this is Hakan Yakin’s fourth major tournament, having played at the 2006 World Cup, Euro 2004 and Euro 2008.
Originally left out of the 2006 World Cup squad for the sake of team harmony, he replaced the injured Johan Vonlathen and played in the last three games.
Yakin’s brother Murat is a former Swiss captain. The family is of Turkish descent. Yakin has spent his entire career in Switzerland, bar two brief spells at Paris St Germain and Stuttgart, where he only played 11 league games.
When at Stuttgart, his mum Ermine rode her tricycle to training to watch her son every day. He was frozen out by the club for a lack of fitness and when he signed for Paris St Germain his new manager, Vahid Halilhodzic, took one look at him and gave a damning verdict: “His wife must be a good cook.”
