Player Profile
The energetic defensive midfielder left what he described as the “frenzy” at Manchester City last summer in a £2m move to St Etienne.
He was a regular starter in 2009/10 as his new club finished one place above the relegation zone.
He began his career with Swiss Second Division club Sion, where his father worked as a groundsman, and helped them to promotion in 2006 before his £4.5m switch to Manchester City the following summer.
After a first Premier League season in which he did a passable impression of his two footballing heroes – Claude Makelele and Patrick Vieira – Gelson found his playing time limited after Mark Hughes replaced Sven-Goran Eriksson as manager.
Born in the Cape Verde Islands, he moved to Switzerland from the former Portuguese territory when he was five years old. He made three starts in the 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign.
