Player Profile
The youngest player at Euro 2008 is maturing into an accomplished centre-forward.
The 6ft 3in Derdiyok scored on his debut for Bayer Leverkusen last summer and ended the season with 12 league goals as his club finished fourth in the German Bundesliga.
Nonetheless, he is not expected to break up the Swiss strike partnership of Alexander Frei and Blaise Nkufo at the World Cup.
Derdiyok scored 12 minutes into his international debut at Wembley in February 2008 against an England side being led by Fabio Capello for the first time. Two years beforehand he had been playing amateur football for Basel-based Old Boys.
He was given his breakthrough by then-Basel coach Christian Gross, who bought Derdiyok shortly after he scored against Basel in a Swiss Cup game. The youngster went on to score 17 goals in 63 top-flight games over three seasons.
He is one of three Swiss players, alongside Hakan Yakin and Gokhan Inler, to have joint Swiss-Turkish nationality. The Basel-born player says: “I grew up in Switzerland and played football here since I was a child, so why would I want to play for Turkey?”
