The Swiss No.1 was a key figure as Wolfsburg were crowned Bundesliga champions for the first time in their history in 2009, but the goalkeeper missed the first three months of this year due to a knee injury which eventually required surgery.
Benaglio, who has committed himself to Wolfsburg until 2013, returned to action at the end of March.
The Swiss-Italian was named as the national team’s first choice ahead of the friendly with England in February 2008, having previously been one of three regular goalkeepers used in rotation since the 2006 World Cup. He was an unused squad member four years ago.
Benaglio started out as a striker when he joined his local youth team at the age of 14. He was soon converted to goalkeeper and went on to play for Grasshoppers, Stuttgart and Portuguese club Nacional before joining Wolfsburg in January 2008.
Former Bayern Munich coach Felix Magath, who brought Benaglio to Wolfsburg, has said he has “no weaknesses.”
