The rangy Busquets overtook Yaya Toure as Barcelona’s first-choice defensive midfielder in 2009/10, and his progression hastened the omission of the more established Marcos Senna from Spain’s World Cup squad.
Nonetheless, Busquets has received mixed reviews and courted controversy in the Champions League semi-final second leg against Inter Milan when he feigned serious injury to get opponent Thiago Motta sent off, even looking from behind his hands to check the Brazilian had been dismissed.
Busquets only made his league debut in September 2008 but by the end of his breakthrough campaign he had won the treble of Spanish league and cup and Champions League and went on to in all three of Spain’s group matches at last year’s Confederations Cup in South Africa.
The son of former Barcelona goalkeeper Carles Busquets, Sergi spent the 2007/08 season playing for Barcelona’s B team under coach Pep Guardiola, who promoted him to the senior squad following his own elevation to first-team coach.
