Player Profile
A quick and unfussy central defender, Albiol’s arrival at Real Madrid last June was largely unheralded as it came in the wake of world-record deals for Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo, but he has impressed with his ability to read the game and pick the right pass, a legacy of the early days of his career as a midfielder.
Prior to joining Madrid, Albiol was with Valencia, having been given his first-team debut aged 18 by then-manager Rafa Benitez, and helped them win the Spanish Cup in 2008.
He suffered a near-fatal car accident in 2004 while on his way to join Getafe in a season-long loan deal and spent 17 days in intensive care. Remarkably, he made his debut for Getafe four months later.
